About this Item
Two smart pictorially bound pieces of juvenile adventure fiction by W. H. G Kingston, illustrated with plates in colour. 'The Two Supercargoes' is set in the depths of Africa, and 'Old Jack' tells of a seafaring adventure.Written by William Henry Giles Kingston (1814-1880), a prolific writer of adventure novels for boys. His works were often set at sea or in exciting foreign places. He also wrote accounts of real voyages and discoveries all over the world. Robert Louis Stevenson mentions Kingston, as well as R. M. Ballantyne, in the poem which serves as a preface to Treasure Island.Undated; dated from copies on Jisc. Each volume is illustrated with a frontispiece, an illustrated half title page and four plates beside. Collated, complete.Bound in splendid pictorial cloth. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with a little bumping to the head and tail of the spines. The gilt has faded a touch, particularly to 'Old Jack'. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown of both volumes, and a contemporary ownership inscription to the front blank of 'The Two Supercargoes'. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are occasionally spotted, but generally bright and clean. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 776R36
