At the narrow hinge between two great lakes, history turns sharp. Where lakes meet, empires shift. Old And New Mackinac draws you into the straits of Mackinac region, when canoes, trade goods, and competing flags determined the fate of the interior. J. A. Van Fleet assembles a local history book with the authority of a historical document collection, built from copious extracts by Marquette, Hennepin, La Houtan, Cadillac, Alexander Henry, and other witnesses. The result is an explorer accounts anthology that threads mackinac island history into the wider story of the great lakes fur trade and french colonial Michigan. From marquette missionary journals to the alexander henry travel narrative, these perspectives illuminate diplomacy and devotion, commerce and conflict, settlement and survival across the new france frontier era. Read it for vivid first-hand voices; keep it for the way it anchors names, places, and timelines that still shape the shoreline. Valuable to casual readers seeking a gripping true past, and to classic-history collectors who prize foundational regional writing, this volume remains a steady great lakes genealogy reference for michigan history researchers tracing families and movements through a borderland that was never quiet.
