First UK edition in grey paper covered boards with bright gilt spine title w/red ruling. 188pp text foxed on endpapers and edges of page block. No names, tears or soil seen, fep upper corner clipped. Original dust wrapper shows slight rubbing at tips and spine ends, soil on cream background rear panel, now in new mylar and shows well. Story of four children who went to stay at Auntie's house in the country. While they were exploring the farm, they forgot to put the hens in the hen house one night and a fox came and massacred the lot. A local farmer caught wind and said the fox must be shot, the children after witnessing the fox being caught in a trap, then escaping are determined the fox shall live, the hunter - an old man whose wisdom in the ways of animals the young boy admires enormously - is determined the fox shall die, at his hand. The book is full of love and knowledge of the countryside, and a completely unsentimental probing into human relationships and the relationships of people and the natural world.
