Old and on Their Own

With the help of a photographic essay, the eminent child psychologist and Pulitzer Prize-winner records the thoughts, aspirations, worries, and reflections on aging of eleven elderly, single men and women, capturing their dignity and courage.

Dr. Robert Coles has spent his life doing documentary work. He teaches at Harvard, Duke, and the University of North Carolina. He and Alex Harris, a photographer and professor at Duke University, are coeditors of DoubleTake magazine. Thomas Roma's work has been widely exhibited and published. He is professor of photography at the Columbia University School of Arts, a contributing editor of DoubleTake, and lives in Brooklyn, New York.
