Old Schenectady

Before New York was a metropolis, it was a chain of stubborn river towns where faith, trade, and danger met at the palisade. Old Schenectady brings one of those places back into focus. A town speaks in fragments. George S. Roberts gathers a historical sketches collection that moves from Dutch colonial heritage to the tense edges of frontier community life, following the people who shaped Schenectady New York history in the colonial New York era. These vivid, grounded portraits of early New York settlers and institutions illuminate how a small settlement negotiated war, worship, land, and neighbourly duty in the Mohawk Valley history and the wider Hudson River Valley history. Roberts writes with an eye for record and remembrance, balancing municipal fact with lived experience. Read it as an absorbing local history book, or keep it close as a genealogy research reference, rich in names, places, and the texture of everyday civic life. As a piece of American town history, Old Schenectady holds enduring value: it preserves regional memory at the point where oral tradition meets documented record, and helps explain how New York grew town by town. For casual readers it is a window onto place; for classic-literature collectors, a cornerstone of New York State heritage. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. An essential addition for regional history enthusiasts and collectors.
