About this Item
End of nineteenth century / beginning of twentieth century. This book was published as a present to the readers of ?the News of the World?, an english newspaper established in 1843; it was the cheapest paper of its time; aimed at the working class, it covered crime, scandals and smutty gossip. It exists to this day. This volume is one of the countless editions of Oliver Twist, the celebrated novel by the english author Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Endowed with an extraordinary linguistic inventiveness, Dickens poured in his novels an almost uparalleled popular vitality, reaching a vast audience, right from the start of his career. Oliver Twist (1837-38), fits into the climate of early industrialism and of ensuing social unrest and moralistic prejudice of the urban burgeoisie; this novel has been regarded as the leading literary work on social realism of the nineteenth century. Oliver Twist combines the structure of novels about criminals with the social and moral interest of the story of a waif, torn between the vicious word of the metropolis and the amiable world of family ties and of rural life. Dickens skillfully describes the manic atmosphere of contemporary reality and its atrocities, but clearly reaffirms that good can triumph over evil. Small octavo, publisher?s binding, titles and author?s portrait in gilt on front cover, titles and illustration in gilt on spine, blind toolings on back cover.
