This book's primary focus is the theoretical derivation of mixed-layer models for simulating basal reflections of carbonate crystals with cation disorder, through the interpretation of X-ray diffraction effects observed in samples with varying ratios of calcium to magnesium carbonate. Utilizing a defined set of mathematical parameters, a three-packet Markov-1 model was applied to hypothetical crystals containing alternating basal cation layers of calcite and magnesite, along with a variable third packet type simulating various degrees of mixed layering. One packet type has a regular sequence of Ca-Mg-Ca plane units, another has three kinds of multiple layers (packets) with correlation extending to the immediately preceding packet(s), and the third packet type has random packet succession. Calculated basal diffraction patterns are compared to experimental measurements, enabling researchers to categorize carbonate mixed layering observed in sedimentary limestones and dolomite rhombohedra found naturally. The methodology presented could be instrumental in understanding related carbonate phenomena and furthering research on mineral structures, crystallography, and other fields.
