Online Psychoanalysis: A Contemporary Introduction (Routledge Introductions to Contemporary Psychoanalysis)

Written in clear and accessible language, this book offers an engaging and timely exploration of how the digital revolution is reshaping psychodynamic practice.

Drawing on the latest research and clinical insights, Haim Weinberg examines the impact and effectiveness of online psychodynamic psychotherapy compared to in-person work. The book delves deeply into the therapeutic alliance ― the factor most strongly linked to positive outcomes ― and explores the unique challenges therapists face in virtual settings: Loss of control over the therapeutic environment, the disembodied nature of online encounters, and the struggle to maintain presence. For each obstacle, Weinberg provides practical, creative strategies, including methods for reading nonverbal cues, handling technical disruptions, and navigating transference and countertransference when technology becomes part of the analytic matrix. The text also covers multiple formats ― individual, couple, and group therapy ― and discusses how core psychodynamic processes are preserved and transformed online.

Online Psychoanalysis: A Contemporary Introduction is an essential resource for students, trainees, and experienced clinicians eager to understand and master the online therapeutic space.
