Sensing the Other Side

There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to ... When I walk into a crowded room and prepare to do my work, I never know what to expect. My name is John Cappello. I am a psychic medium, and I work in the "Outer Limits". I have to keep an open mind and allow my soul's energy to capture information and energy from "beyond the physical". The area in which I work is not science fiction. It is real life, and I want to share with you my experiences and give you my interpretations of the way psychic energy is manifested. The images and stories I receive using my psychic abilities are often unbelievable and fantastic, but they are all true. They represent a vast array of human experiences, and they connect all of us together. I have learned not to be astonished, but I remain amazed with the human spirit and the fascinating information that can be attained by using my psychic gifts. My work utilizes my entire body, and I have to be aware of even the slightest bits of information I receive in order to give an accurate account of a situation surrounding a client. The smallest, most insignificant detail might be the one thing that can change a life. The experience I am about to share with you is just one session of the hundreds I have been associated with during my career in the metaphysics community.

I was invited to attend a local event with other psychic mediums, and my part of the program was to begin in the early afternoon. This event was sponsored by one of the local metaphysical outlets in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area, and all of the people involved were friends of mine. We decided to start a little early since most people had finished their lunch and were waiting for the next person to be on stage. Excerpts from this event and other sample readings follow.

Everyone has their own style of giving messages, and I am no different. My style is not any better or worse than other talented mediums, but I do offer my own philosophy as a guide. There is much said by skeptics about cold readings and a lack of evidence when communicating information to a client. It is impossible to please everyone, but I do my best to focus on individuals and remove any doubt about psychic ability and spirit communication. I focus on individuals and see energy around them. It's a "can't miss" for me unless the receiver of the information simply does not accept the information or denies it.

I walked up in front of about sixty people and grabbed the microphone. My first thought was to introduce myself and ask the group if they had ever heard about me. There were a few people I knew since I was in my home market, but I had never seen most of them. It's best that I do not know anything about a person when I do a reading. I made a few introductory remarks about myself and my work.

My work is very serious since it involves connecting with crossed-over loved ones and friends. It can be very sobering to obtain information about a devastating accident, disease, or a suicide. Seeing and experiencing another person's grief, as a medium, is the least attractive of all the areas of my practice. The energy in the room felt a little low, so I thought I would break up the seriousness of the crowd by making up a corny joke. My appearance was after a couple of other mediums, so I complimented them by saying, "I am honored to follow such distinguished mediums. Their talent is very rare and their work is well done!" The joke did not even get a groan! No one laughed or made any kind of sound.

I knew it was time to give up any ideas of being a standup comedian and remain in a field I knew. My next move was to accept the fact that this group was very serious and meant business. They had expectations, and they demanded I deliver. Following other mediums who had already demonstrated their abilities was okay with me and being in a demanding crowd did not add pressure or stress. I was simply trying to lighten the mood with a joke because people in grief need to be able to have some relief. This group was no nonsense, so I had to win them over with good readings and solid evidence of information being received from "beyond the physical". The first person I chose to read was a case in point. She was a person in grief but did not appear very interested in the first person who made himself known to me. Her father came in and wanted to share information about his life and his relationship with her. Once it was clear she did not want to hear from him, I began to look at other spirits around her. Her father was over her right shoulder where I expected him to be. When a spirit appears to me, they often just show their head or something significant to the person receiving the reading. It is not my job to know why they are showing me something specific. I am just to report the information.

Another spirit was behind her in an area where I normally do not see relatives, so I asked her about a young man she may have known who died unexpectedly. She would not validate it, but the information was very clear. The young man was showing me that he had problems with his neck. I asked myself, "Why is he being so specific about his neck?" But he was adamant that it was important. There is always a reason for a spirit to communicate a particular movement, but it may not be apparent at first. Again, no positive response, so I looked in another place. To her left just off her shoulder (the area where I notice friends or people of approximately the same age) stood a woman. This woman was a friend that had recently passed. Once I mentioned this person, I immediately received acknowledgement. She began to show emotion since this friend was dear to her. The information was correct, and she was happy to know her friend was safe and doing well in spirit. It was interesting because once she started acknowledging information, other people began showing up. My subject was sitting next to a man who was at the gallery simply for support, but his mother suddenly appeared to me. She said to tell him, "He was no trouble growing up," and she thanked him for being a good son. Apparently, he was close to his mother and was there for her up until the very end of her life. It meant a lot to him to hear from her because he was not expecting it. He validated that she had told him that he was a good son. These examples are just two of many readings given in the room that day. The first person appeared reluctant to give any information because the person she wanted to hear from did not immediately come forth.

Another person in the room was waiting to hear from her father. However, it was not her father that came in initially. Based on my description of him, she was able to confirm that he was her grandfather. He appeared as a thin man in the shadows and was smoking. He was not a very friendly person, and the client acknowledged that he had not been close to her. He showed himself sitting in a rocking chair with his back turned to me. She told me that, in life, he did not like to be bothered. While he demonstrated this same characteristic to confirm his identity, he willingly wanted to contact her. Many times the people who come in are the ones we least expect, and it is a surprise. She asked, "Where is my father?" I replied, "He is not here at this time." Suddenly, a wood rail fence appeared, and horses were in the background. I told her this, and she replied, "My father loved horses." The next thing I saw was a round face and a bald headed man. He appeared to be a heavy man. She said, "That is my father!" From his expression, I could see that he was a jolly man, and she acknowledged this. The next thing I saw was a rock glass for bourbon. I told her, "I think he is telling me that he drank." She said, "He had a drinking problem." They had a good relationship in life, and she was very happy he appeared to me and let me know he was present in the room.

Psychic information is the easiest of virtually all other disciplines to disprove because the receiver of the information just has to say, "No." The only validation a psychic medium has is the validation from the people receiving the readings. They are the arbiters of truth since the psychic is simply relating information sensed by his or her abilities. There is no script to memorize or coaching for those skilled in the profession. It is just you and the energy you are able to acquire and interpret.

Since a person receiving a reading must say "yes" before it is considered a "hit", it is sometimes only then that the audience gains confidence about a psychic's abilities. I worked the room the best I could with the one hour period given to me and received a lot of information. Our loved ones remain around us when they cross over, and it is my job to recognize them with accuracy and compassion. It needs to be mentioned that, in my opinion, when we reach the spiritual realm, our free will remains. Many times, a spirit may not want to communicate. This is their choice, and I respect it.

The sixty or so people in the room this day were hoping for a word or a sign from a loved one in spirit. Many of the audience were in grief, and this may have contributed to the sobering mood of the room when I arrived. I understand it is impossible to give a meaningful reading to so many in a short period of time, but the people there were hedging their bets that at least one of the mediums participating would be able to capture a glimpse of one of their loved ones before their hour ended. This would give them comfort and peace of mind.

The members of the audience this day were a lot like me when I started my journey to learn more about life on the other side. They were not willing to settle for waiting until the day when they were in spirit to gain insight and knowledge about the whereabouts of the people who were precious to them. They were not finished with their relationship and wanted it to continue in any way possible, even if it meant hearing a comforting word from a medium in a crowded room.

I know the importance of giving accurate information about a loved one in spirit to a vulnerable person in grief. No one can be 100%, but giving solid validation is a huge responsibility and the information can be priceless. It may just be the catalyst allowing a person to move forward in their grief process. The healing they can experience may last the rest of their lives. It is for this reason I continue to do my work and the primary reason I was working on this day with the other mediums.

From my experience, I have found that spirits do not dwell on the negatives in their lives. They will discuss difficult issues, but they are not inclined to be judgmental or hateful when they make their presence known to me. The spirits in the room were very normal in this regard on this day. One of the spirits that communicated with me indicated that he was the husband of a lady in the front row. She said, "Which one?" The question was a surprise. It was then that I saw the heads of other people showing up around her. She asked if the husband talking to her was the "real one" or the other one. I told her this was the man she lived with in Norway or some other very cold country. She said that they had lived in the far north of Great Britain and that, yes, this was the real husband she wanted to hear from. He told me to communicate with her about the oil and gas rigs on which he had worked in the North Sea, and she acknowledged that this was one of the projects he worked on when he was alive. I saw oil rigs in the cold ocean, so I described the images I was seeing.

This was the man who wanted her to move back to the United States where she could have a better life. It was this information that allowed this lady to acknowledge her husband was communicating with her from another realm. She felt good he was in the room with her, but we were not finished giving her messages. Another man was trying to talk to her, but she did not want to hear from him. It was at this point I felt I should move to another person. When a spirit wants to communicate to us, and we refuse to listen to a message from them, I understand that there are unresolved issues between the two people.

When uncomfortable situations arise, the receiver of a message changes their demeanor. I can handle these situations in a public forum to some degree, but a deep seeded issue needs to be handled privately, not in this setting. The problem between this lady and the less favored husband was intense, and I backed away from it by saying, "It is difficult to do inter- dimensional marriage counseling." This brought a small laugh. She was decidedly upset when the second man appeared, and I felt it was not a good idea to pursue messages from him. The comment I made was a way to change the energy and to back away from a tense situation. The crowd's laughter kept the feeling good in the room. There is a point when you know it is time to move on to another person. I felt I needed to leave this lady while the energy was high and positive. Staying with negativity could have lowered the energy in the entire room. My next subject was very curious because he was sitting off to the side away from the rest of the crowd. His energy was unique in that I saw him as a loner and working as an inventor or someone who did research. He acknowledged he was a government scientist and often worked by himself. His amazement that I was able to gather this information was obvious on his face, and I then saw a woman's spirit around him. I thought the lady was his wife at first, but when a lady sitting two seats from him said, "I hope not," it was apparent the person in spirit was not his wife.

This lady was his mother, but she passed away at a relatively young age. She was in the position of a mother, but her young age confused me. When this happens, the relationships are unclear, and I can get it wrong. This spirit was gracious and indicated she died from cancer. The man was grateful to hear from his mother, and he had a lot to think about after my reading. His wife was grateful I was not having a premonition about her demise!

It was time to move to another area of the room. I have sat in many sessions with other practitioners and know it can get rather boring listening to other people's messages with little chance to get a reading. This is why I move around. It keeps the energy of the room high and lets people know the next reading may be theirs.

I moved to the other side of the room and saw a lady in the back that appeared to be in distress. It was easy to see that her mother was just behind her left shoulder and wanted to communicate. I could also hear her voice. The message from her mother was one of thanks because the lady had helped her in the final days of her life. She said she knew that her daughter was alone these days with no family around her. It's difficult to live in an area with no family or close friends. "We do the things we need to do in order to make a living and hope for the best," was the gist of the mother's talk to her daughter. This is what the lady receiving the message needed to hear. She was elated. The message was accurate, and it uplifted her spirit. She moved to the North Texas area from another state after her mother had passed and she missed her. She did not feel she did enough for her mother, but her mother was very complimentary of her. Her mother's spirit was happy to have the opportunity to speak. Later that day, the daughter found me and told me what a difference the reading made to her. She was very grateful.
