"Open Thou Mine Eyes": Defending the Old Testament in Latter-day Saint Doctrine

The Old Testament is often viewed as a daunting text - massive, ancient, and separated from modern readers by a vast cultural gap. Yet, for the prepared student, it offers a profound foundation for understanding the Restored Gospel. This volume explores how the ancient world strengthens modern faith by navigating complex historical questions and illuminating rich connections between the Bible and Restoration scripture. By prioritizing core doctrines and addressing critical scholarship, these essays explore the focal lenses necessary to view scripture through the framework of family, covenant, and symbolism. They tackle hard questions regarding the conquest of Canaan, the historicity of Jonah, and ancient polygamy while illuminating the enduring connections between the "rod of iron," the brazen serpent, and the sealing power. From the cosmology of Genesis to the prophecies of Malachi, this volume offers a faithful defense of the scriptures, inviting readers to leave behind the tendency to be overwhelmed by the complexity of the Bible and instead find within it a feast of ancient truths for modern faith.
