Item description from seller

Roe was a Presbyterian minister and popular 19th century American novelist, and this work is one of his best-known titles. The novel centres on Walter Gregory, a young man emotionally exhausted by disappointment, illness, and spiritual drift. Retreating from urban life to a quieter rural setting, he encounters the Walton family, particularly Miss Walton, whose practical kindness and moral steadiness gradually "open" his hardened, defensive nature. Ornate cover, wear to cover, pages slightly tanned. Inscription to front end page, signature, libris page, minor foxing evident.
