About this Item

Octavo, later calf, probably late 17th or early 18th century, gilt spine, red and green morocco lettering pieces gilt, bookplate removed, joints cracked, small chip from head and foot of spine, lower portion of front and back cover watermarked, bottom blank edges of first portion of work watermarked, title bit age darkened, tip of first blank end-paper snipped away and signature of David Turner (18th century?) on that leaf, good. The scholarly apparatus criticus of the famed Scaliger had first appeared in a Basel edition shortly before. Mamert Patisson had just married Robert Estienne's widow, and had taken over the Estienne establishment. This Scaliger edition of Verrius Flaccus appears to be only the second work to bear his name as printer, preceded by a rare edition of Hippocrates. Patisson's skill quickly led to his appointment as Royal printer in 1578. Adams: V 589; Brunet V, 1147-1148 "Belle edition"; Graesse VII, 287; Schweiger 1134; Schreiber The Estiennes, 247.
