Opere Di Antonio Raffaello Mengs: Volume 2

Opere Di Antonio Raffaello Mengs by Anton Raphael Mengs. Opere Di Antonio Raffaello Mengs is a collection of writings by the eighteenth?century painter Anton Raphael Mengs, including letters, memoirs, and critical essays. The volume comprises Mengs’s letters to Monsignor Fabroni and to Don Antonio Ponz, extensive descriptions and judgments of principal Madrid paintings (Velázquez, Ribera, Morillo, Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt), and Memorie on the life and works of Correggio (Antonio Allegri). It also contains Mengs’s discussions on the origins and progress of the Fine Arts, reflections on the role of academies, and the education of painters. The book provides a window into eighteenth?century art criticism, connoisseurship, and the study of ancient sculpture and painting, with Mengs arguing for a synthesis of drawing, color, and composition inspired by classical principles. The collection reveals Mengs’s reverence for High Renaissance masters (Raphael, Correggio, Titian) and his insistence on a disciplined, theory?driven approach to practice. A cornerstone document for the history of art theory, it informs later debates on aesthetics and pedagogy.
