The Campaign to Stop Government Spying was a coalition organization founded in 1977 to oppose and reform government survelliance practices deemed excessive and unconstitutional. It was launched partly in response to the Church Committee revelations, which revealed egregious surveillance practices by what has become known as the Deep State. The organization was composed of over 80 member and cooperating organizations that spanned the radical and progressive movement, and included the Black Panther Party, La Raza Unida, Church of Scientology, United Church of Christ, National Lawyers Guild, ACLU, and other watchdog groups such as Counter Spy, etc. The organization fragmented in late 1978 and renamed itself the Campaign for Political Rights. Organizing Notes began publication in April 1977 and was issued monthly (sometimes bimonthly) and in its later years, quarterly. It appears to have been published until at least 1984. Issues included detailed reporting on campaigns to spy on leftwing activists, CIA recruitment on college campuses, COINTELPRO, and local police infiltration methods. Issues often included supplemental material that included press releases, special reports, conference documents, meeting minutes, etc. Included in this 22 issue run are many early issues including a complete run of Volume 2-Volume 3, Number 5. The unnumbered first issue (April 1977), 3 (June 1977), 5 (September 1977), 6 (October 1977), 7 (November 1977 [includes 5 supplemental documents]); Volume 2, Number 1 (January 1978 [1 supplemental document], Volume 2, Number 2 (February 1978), Volume 2, Number 3 (March 1978 [1 supplemental document]), Volume 2, Number 4 (April 1978), Volume 2, Number 5 (May 1978), Volume 2, Number 6 (June-July 1978), Volume 2, Number 7 (August-September 1978 [1 supplemental document]), Volume 2, Number 8 (October 1978), Volume 2, Number 9 (November-December 1978); Volume 3, Number 1 (January-February 1979 [2 supplemental documents]), Volume 3, Number 2 (March 1979), Volume 3, Number 3 (April-May 1979), Volume 3, Number 4 (June 1979 [1 supplemental document], Volume 3, Number 5 (July/August 1979); Volume 4, Number 2 (March 1980), Volume 7, Number 5 (September/October 1983), and Volume 7, Number 6 (Winter '83/84). Issues are generally composed of loose, folded sheets (later issues stapled) and were generally 16 p. (without supplements), later issues were lengthier. A near fine run with a few issues containing brief notations to the cover or mailing labels/addresses. Issues are not common in either the trade nor institutionally.
