xvi, 328 p. 20 cm. One b&w line drawing frontispiece. Burgundy cloth with blank impressing. Spine faded, chipped at both ends, library label at lower end. Corners bumped. Hinges cracking internally. Marks from bookplate on front pastedown and small label on rear. Signature and blind stamp on title page. Light foxing within. John Dunmore Lang (1799 - 1878), Australian Presbyterian clergyman, writer, politician and activist, is best known as the first prominent advocate of an independent Australian republic. His voluminous writings delved into other topics, however, as can be seen from this interesting volume, first published in 1834. There seems to be little linguistic, archaeological or ethnographic data to suggest the Polynesians were the first inhabitants of the Americas. Sabin 38867.
