About this Item
6th edn., with additions and corrections; 47th thousand. Original green cloth with gilt spine titles; only gently bumped at top and bottom of spine and corners; small areas of staining to covers; hinges cracked but holding firm. Internally very crisp, clean and bright, with just a little age-toning to endpapers. FEP contains the large attractive sticker of the Ashmolean Natural History Society of Oxfordshire, the oldest Natural History Society in England, from which this book was deaccessioned, and a very small catalogue number sticker; FFEP contains a presentation sticker stating that it was purchased for the Oxfordshire Natural History Society (which merged with the Ashmolean in 1901) by the committee in 1895. Overall Very Good. Photos available on request. An attractive and well-preserved copy of the 6th edition, which was retitled omitting the word 'On', to indicate that it is the definitive explanation of the origin of the species. It also uses the word 'evolution' for this first time and contains all of Darwin's amendments before his death in 1882, including his thorough response to the 1872 criticism of Mivart.
