The Origin of Tyranny (Classic Reprint)

How coinage and commerce shaped early Greek tyrants—and why that matters today.

This exploration looks at how Greece’s seventh and sixth centuries B.C. saw money and markets powerfully reshape politics. It argues that rulers who rose as tyrants often did so not just through force, but by exploiting new coinage and commercial opportunities that altered city-state power. The book surveys major cities like Athens, Samos, Lydia, Corinth, and beyond, tying together economic change with political shift. It shows how merchants, bankers, and minting practices helped some leaders gain influence that became outright tyranny, while painting a broader picture of an era where trade and industry drove political innovation.

• How the invention of metal coinage created new political leverage for rulers.
• Connections between commerce, industry, and the rise of tyrants across multiple Greek cities.
• Examples of early trade networks and their influence on wealth and power.
• Context for understanding the economic forces behind political change in archaic Greece.
