Folio, original calf gilt, spine very worn, hinges broken and covers detached, covers worn, minor foxing. Aware of the sensitive nature of these papers, Milton entrusted them to his amanuensis Thomas Ellwood. They remained unpublished for nearly a century until the noted antiquary John Nickolls had them printed from the original manuscripts for the first time.
