The Orphaned Ducklings And Other Tales

Do your children want answers for what’s happening to our environment? Or, how to interpret man’s influences upon Nature? 100 years ago, the Danish author, Carl Ewald, wrote classic children’s stories that touch on these themes, and are now available in new English translations. These stories will lead you and your children into a deeper understanding of how man has impacted…sometimes, collided and crashed…into the easily disturbed habitats and niches of our common nature.

In his time, Carl Ewald saw that impact as an impending tension that would test our resolve to respect nature as one of man’s most precious keepsakes. Whether it is our forests, our oceans, protecting our feathered friends, our wild animals or fields of grain, what we eat, or even the weather… they are all affected by the decisions and actions of man. Ewald entreated us to accept that responsibility with care and compassion. He also strived to give children—and their elders—some needed advice regarding how to interpret and understand the give and the take of our relationship with nature.

Teachers, homeschoolers, parents: Are you looking for exceptional content in your Middle-Grade children’s reading choices? Read the first story now as an example, (available under Look Inside) and guide them into substantive readings covering such topics as: respecting wildlife’s habitat needs, species competition, overzealous plundering of our natural resources, agriculture as a disturbing activity in nature, and the vagaries of weather events that squeeze on our lifestyles.

This second book of ten richly-colored illustrated stories is a sampling of not just the sweep of Ewald’s interest in revealing a real-world nature, but also the high literary quality of his stories. His major concern was to steer us all into learning to live with nature in a gentler and more humanitarian way, while succeeding to make it simple enough for a child to understand.

There are many other stories and major topics that you will find in Books One and Three. Have a look.
