Out with Joy

What does it take for a boy from rural Minnesota to become a global physician? Faith, grit, and a heart open to joy.

Out with Joy is a deeply personal and reflective memoir by Dr. Richard Roach that traces his remarkable transformation from a clumsy, curious child into an internationally respected medical missionary. Raised in a poor but loving home, Roach shares vivid tales of growing up in Northern Minnesota, including his humorous misadventures in sports, the profound influence of his father’s work with First Nations tribes, and his early fascination with medicine. Through canoeing, family, and spiritual awakenings, he charts a path filled with unlikely blessings.

Driven by a calling he likens to God’s use of “an untrained jackass,” Roach weaves together stories of hardship and hope, leading to an inspiring career in global health. His journey takes readers from the icy shores of Lake Superior to life-changing missions in Africa, Madagascar, and China. Along the way, he offers historical and cultural insights into Anishinabek traditions, Malagasy hospitality, Chinese resilience, and Russian guests who shaped his home life.

Both humorous and deeply moving, Out with Joy is a faith-based medical memoir that celebrates the power of community, perseverance, and divine guidance. Perfect for readers of Christian autobiographies, global health stories, or heartfelt life journeys.
