Out of Order

Rob Donnelly entered a contemplative Catholic monastery in his early twenties. He stayed for nearly a decade. Then, in a break that surprised those around him, he left.

Out of Order is a spare, unsentimental memoir of a young man's search for belonging inside the walls of a religious order-and what happens when the voice that once led him to surrender begins to fall silent. With clarity and psychological precision, Donnelly traces the slow work of disillusionment, the disintegration of certainties, and the quiet necessity of stepping away from a life once held as sacred.

This is not a tale of scandal or lost faith. It is something more difficult: a reckoning with obedience, solitude, rupture, and the long, hidden labour of returning to one's own voice.

Rob Donnelly is a Tasmanian writer whose work explores the silences left by history-personal, institutional, and colonial. A former Discalced Carmelite, his writing is shaped by contemplative traditions and a deep attention to what is unspoken or erased. He is the author of Out of Order, a restrained and unsentimental memoir of monastic life, and soon to be released CON, a literary novel that reimagines Australia's convict past from within the voice of the transported.Donnelly's work resists simplification. Whether writing memoir or fiction, he traces the long afterlife of exile, the tension between erasure and voice, and the fragile persistence of human dignity in the face of institutional power. His style is psychologically astute, ethically grounded, and attentive to the emotional realism of lives lived outside of triumph.
