Out to Win, The Second ?Peking to Paris? Motor Chalenge, 1997. This event of nearly 100 cars travel half way around the world, through some of the most desolate places on Earth. John was the navigator and Gerry Crown the driver. Gerry writes the forward to the book and signs and presents this book to his friend Kevin Bell. The book details John Bryson?s experiences as Gerry Crowns navigator on the 46 day challenge, Gerry and John were a formidable team. Illustrated covers, f.e.p missing, signed by Gerry Crown on half title page, 320p, colour illustrations throughout. John relates the different competitors, their cars, the trials.
The 1997 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge was a commemorative 90th-anniversary re-enactment of the legendary 1907 race, organised by Endurance Rally Association founder Philip Young. It featured 94 to 100 vintage and classic crews covering roughly 10,000 miles (16,000 km) over 45 days to 7 weeks. The route took a distinct southern path compared to 1907, crossing through Tibet, India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece, and Italy. The rally marked the first time since the Chinese Revolution that westerners could drive across the Friendship Bridge into Nepal from Tibet, and permitted driving in Iran for the first time since 1979.Terrain: Crossed high mountain passes in the Himalayas (up to 5,000 meters) and scorching deserts.
The event was won by British pair Phil Surtees and John Bayliss driving a 1942 Willys Jeep, finishing with only 17 minutes in penalties. Many other notable participants included Lord Montague and the author with Gerry Crown.
This volume is a presentation copy from Gerry Crown to his long time friend and mentor Kevin Bell. This is what one person wrote about how Gerry got into racing, a fortuitous meeting with Kevin who also had a passion for motor sport and cars.
?Leaving School he (Gerry Crown) entered for his national service and joined the Air Force. This saw him posted in Tripoli where he contracted very bad pleurisy. Back to England and into a Convalescent home, as was normal in those days, he met Kevin Bell. Kevin is another lively character just like Gerry and the two shared many interests and became lifelong friends, but MOST importantly Kevin could drive and had a car!
As the two of them recovered Gerry was given driving lessons, he passed his driving test the day he was released and went and bought a car that day.
This would make you think Kevin was the world?s best driving instructor? This started Gerry off to becoming a legend in motor sport winning the Peking to Paris rally three times. He and the author were a formidable team.
