Outbreak: Disease Detectives at Work (Discovery! (Pb))

Describes the field of epidemiology and its history, presenting historical and modern case studies and biological explanations of some diseases.

Grade 6-9-In this fascinating book, Friedlander looks at the epidemics and pandemics that have plagued people throughout history. Readers are introduced to the men and women who track down and help to control the viruses, bacteria, parasites, and environmental factors that produce such outbreaks. The author examines the causes of infectious diseases, whether or not a cure has been found for them, and what will happen in the future if science is unable to keep up with the ever-evolving microbes that have killed more humans than all the major wars combined. Many full-color and black-and-white photographs and reproductions enhance the presentation of the material. Students will learn about critical public-health questions and their solutions through epidemiology. Some of the young people who read this worthwhile addition may become the scientists who identify and control risk factors for diseases of the future.

In this informative and highly readable account that successfully walks a tightrope between information and dramatic embellishment, Friedlander illustrates the drama inherent in outbreaks of disease--and the heroic and often ingenious efforts of the people who try to understand and contain them. The sense of mystery and urgency that accompanies such outbreaks is succinctly conveyed in an introduction describing an actual case in 1940s New York City, in which homeless men with blue-tinged skin began appearing on the streets. In the chapters that follow, Friedlander explains important concepts and terminology, presents an interesting historical overview of epidemiology, and looks at contemporary outbreaks, among them Ebola and Legionnaire's Disease. There's also a frank, responsible chapter on AIDS. The book is nicely designed and illustrated. Especially noteworthy are the richly colored photomicrographs of bacteria, viruses, and cells. A fine research source as well as a compelling read in its own right. Tim Arnold
