Container Gardening: Repelling Plant Pests

When pests become a problem, avoid using chemical pesticides if possible. Many pests can be kept at bay by placing unpeeled garlic cloves one inch deep in the soil, near the rim of each pot- about three cloves for a 14-inch pot. To deter "crawlers," sprinkle cayenne pepper on the soil near the rim of the pot. Keep slugs away from tender foliage by placing a shallow container (a jar lid or tin tray) of beer near the bases of the pots. As an alternative to chemical sprays, try making your own organic spray. Simply add the tobacco from four cigarettes, four crushed garlic cloves, one teaspoon of white pepper, two tablespoons of liquid insecticidal soap, and two tablespoons of ammonia to two quarts of hot water. Steep the mixture for several hours and then strain it thoroughly. Spray plants three times a week until health is restored.
