The author mixes biographical information about the two outlaws into a travelog describing his journey across the United States to find sites and information connected with the pair. A journalist born in Scotland, O'Neill was fascinated by figures of the Old West portrayed mainly in motion pictures and paperback novels. Outlaws describes his quest to find the real men and the stories behind the legend of Butch and Sundance. Other works (e.g., Larry Pointer's In Search of Butch Cassidy, Univ. of Oklahoma, 1988) provide more biographical information about the two outlaws. O'Neill offers readers an interesting tale of his journey, interspersed with personal anecdotes and some historical information.
