The Outpost of Eternity

The Outpost Of Eternity by Cosmo Hamilton. The novel is a sweeping blend of social satire, romance and melodrama set among English landed gentry and bohemian London. It follows Billy Russon’s return to England and the surprising ascent of the Thoresby title, only to uncover the ruinous lives of the Okehampton circle. Tony Okehampton’s once-honest world collapses into drink and disarray, while his daughter Dick Okehampton moves through a labyrinth of lovers, guardians, and scheming relatives—from the jewel-like archaisms of Quennor to the modernity of London theatres. Dick’s entanglements include Thoresby (the revived aristocrat), the cosmopolitan Rene de Maingauche, and the enigmatic Miss Emily Sarah Okehampton’s world of proprieties, as well as the men who orbit her life. Against this backdrop of money, power, and moral compromise, the narrative traces loyalty, love, betrayal, and the cost of social ascent, culminating in a fragile, hard-won domestic happiness between Dick and Jack.
