"Outside the Rails: A Rail Route Guide from Chicago to South Bend Airport, IN" serves as a milepost-by-milepost route guide for the 90-mile-long electric interurban train line between Chicago, Gary, Michigan City, and South Bend, Indiana. This route guide was produced in partnership with the marketing team at the Northern Indiana Commuter Rail District. The book begins with a brief introduction by famed railroad author John Kelly about interurbans in the Chicagoland area, including the South Shore Line, North Shore Line, and the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin. The rest of the book explains what passengers see out their window from the train - including historical sites, natural sites, and famous people of Chicago and Northwest Indiana.
