Each stanza of the poem is on its own double-page, lushly-colored spread, with the text in large, clear print, and numbers represented in Arabic numerals as well as written. Slightly anthropomorphized animals carry on their activities amidst landscapes of wildflowers, trees, and other objects. Using rhyme and repetition, the deceptively simple verse provides a vehicle for counting and for identification and recognition of numbers, colors, animals, wildflowers, noises, and actions. The artwork is vibrant and beautifully composed. Unfortunately the colors are not always as described: "pink" pigs are a light pumpkin shade; a "pond so blue" is a weak green; a "red barn door" isn't red. Those familiar with earlier versions may question the need for a rewrite, and they may also wonder what happened to a credit to Olive Wadsworth, who wrote the original "Over in the Meadow."
