Compiled by McWilliams, an English professor and author of several other works about American literature, this hefty index, seven years in the making, offers 8500 bibliographic citations of essay-length interviews with American fiction writers, poets, and essayists. Selection is based on a writer's enduring reputation and position within the American literary world as evidenced by inclusion in standard reference sources such as The Dictionary of Literary Biography, as well as by receipt of major literary awards, by inclusion in anthologies, or by critical analyses. The interviews appear in a wide variety of literary journals, magazines, and even newspapers. Arranged alphabetically by author and then chronologically, entries follow MLA format. Portions of the index have appeared annually from 1994 to 2000 in American Studies International. Three appendixes provide listings of book-length collections of interviews with a single author, of book-length collections with multiple authors, and of authors interviewing authors. While the coverage of the work seems extensive and comprehensive, according to the author, it is not complete. Stan A. Vrana's Interviews and Conversations with 20th-Century Authors Writing in English: An Index (Scarecrow, 1982) complements this by covering a handful of small literary journals not cited by McWilliams.
