PACE Yourself: A Handbook for ESL Tutors (English Language Teacher Development)

PACE Yourself is for inexperienced or volunteer tutors of ESL.

This handbook does not aim to make overnight experts of novices. Rather, the authors provide an easy-to-follow guide for people who want to tutor small groups of nonnative speakers of English but do not know how. Reproducible forms, appendixes of resources, terminology, ESL publishers, and professional organizations of interest to ESL tutors add relevant, useful information. This handbook is designed to meet your needs as a beginning tutor of ESL. It should be a key to many hours of rewarding and successful tutoring.

Teresa S. Dalle is an associate professor of English at the University of Memphis. She has been teaching ESL since 1974 and educating teachers since 1984. She also conducts teacher education courses and workshops, directs practica for ESL student teachers, and researches in the area of application of theory to practice in ESL. She has published numerous papers on various topics related to the teaching of ESL.

Laurel J. Young runs her own tutoring business, Language Access Tutoring Service, in which she works with students of all ages to help them develop English language skills. She contracts with schools and businesses to provide English tutoring to specific groups and also provides help and advice to many individuals on tutoring as a profession. She has presented at regional meetings of ESL teachers.
