Item description from seller

Text/NEW & Bright. Softcover/NF w/light soiling & surface wear. PO name to fEP. An intellectual biography of French Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1662), child prodigy educated by his father, mathematician, physicist, an early inventor of the mechanical calculator, philosopher, writer and Catholic theologian. French-American philosopher Emile Cailliet (1894 - 1981) traces Pascal's thought developement from from skeptic to believer, from scientist to Christian. Balanced analysis based on detailed coverage of Pascal's letters, notes, & conversations, with extended exposition of the debate between Pascal and the Jesuits on free will and predestination. Volume is an essay on ideas than a standard biography, although many interesting details in Pascal's life are included. 283 pgs in 18 chapters. Fine copy despite flaws.
