London: Vizetelly and Co., [1889], Third Edition. VIZETELLY'S THIRD EDITION. Elegant half leather binding with gilt titles and raised bands to the spine, marbled paper covered boards, page top edges gilt, others tanned, internally very clean and slightly tanned. Minor damage with loss to the leather at the top of the spine of Vol I, with splitting to the top of the joint. Other joints rubbed. Vizetelly first pirated the 1886 Gottsberger/Harpers edition (translated by Bell from the 1884 second French edition) of 'War and Peace' in the autumn of that year. Later editions followed in 1887 and 1888. Following Vizetelly's imprisonment for obscene libel, his son reissued the second and third editions from new premises in Henrietta Street, which can be regarded as either the third edition second state, or the fifth or sixth Vizetely editions overall. Provenance: no inscriptions or bookplates. Approximately 7 ½ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good to very good condition gilt titles to spine, minor marks and chips, worn with loss to the top of Vol I . Joints fair to good condition worn and rubbed, split to the top of the front joint of Vol I. Corners good condition gently worn and bumped. Boards good condition worn, with minor marks, marbled paper covered boards. Page edges good condition top edge gilt, others tanned. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition dark brown. End papers good condition dark brown. Title page good condition gently tanned. Pages good condition gently tanned. Binding good condition attractive.
