29, [1 blank] pp. Original printed front wrapper [detached], stitched. Lightly toned, light chipping at blank edges with a few closed tears [no loss]. Good. "It would seem to be a law of Providence that human progress should be secured by means of fierce collisions." Porter warns of the dangers in lusting for material gain and-- after the bruising struggle over the Compromise of 1850-- "the blind and bigoted and passionate rage of party spirit." He denounces slavery as a great evil, but argues that abolitionists who would ignore the law create even greater evils. OCLC records a number of institutional locations for this item.
