Papers presented at the 7th Symposium at the Blackett Lab, London, Sept 1978. Among the editors' innovations was to publish a volume containing short preprints of the papers for the use of attendees. About half these contributions were sufficiently worthy that their authors were asked to expand them for publication in the current volume. Thus the contents have the added values of floor critique and theorist's rebuttal, and are consquently less emphemeral than such papers sometimes are.
