Early printing (first published 1871). i-x, 11-167 pages. Hardcover: H 17.75cm x L 12.25cm. Dark purple cloth with beveled board edges; spine sunned with heel frayed; gilt stamping to spine and front board remains fairly bright. Personal whaling-themed blue bookplate of St. Louis physician, naval historian, and author E. Lee Dorsett (Edward Lee Dorsett, 1883-1967) tipped-in at front pastedown; short tear at bottom of pages v-vi with bottom corners of pages vii-x creased from past fold-ins; interior pages are still bright and clean. Binding has several stress points but all still reasonably firm.
