62/62 plates (volume 1), 61/61 plates (volume2), oblong 16 x 20, ¾ leather, maroon cloth, gilt decorated spine and covers, gilt lettering, marbled endpapers. Covers shelfworn, sunned, spotted, stained, scuffed/scraped, outer/inner hinges cracked, rear cover of volume 1 almost detached, front cover of volume 2 detached, occasional light water staining/spotting, edge toning, couple of pencil notes, in volume 2 lower edge of free front endpaper is missing small part and is detached, with chipping to the next few pages including tissue guard and a few plates loosening else contents in both good/very good. Inscribed in both volumes: Presented to Mr. Simon Langell, shipbuilder. St. Clair, Michigan, by the author W.H. Webb June 1898. Simon Langell was a well known ship builder in and mayor of St.Clair in the late 19th century. William H. Webb, according to one contemporary account, considered him to be "the first naval architect in this country." He was a skilled artist and engineer who combined these talents to become one of the finest shipbuilders in the country. Webb was a founding member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, a philanthropist who founded the Webb Academy and Home for Shipbuilders (now known as the Webb Institute) where young men of good moral character could learn to be shipbuilders at no cost and aged shipbuilders would have a retirement home.
