[2], i-xlii, 43-484, [2] pages. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 15.25cm. Original brown full calf leather binding. Boards rubbed with wear along gilt tooled dentelle edges; top board corners worn; splitting along both front and rear joints causing some pliability to boards but with hinges still persevering and text block still firmly bound; shallow chipping at spine ends with some loss to gilt stamped bar at head; some other flaking/loss to spine's gilt bars but with black label title compartment still retaining bright gilt lettering where book's title is given as "Pope's Works." Marbled edges and endpapers; pencil notation on front free endpaper verso; second front flyleaf recto has four-line ink inscription "Presented to Caroline A. Wallace | by her uncle | J.M. Wallace | June 24th, 1856." Foxing most prevalent on several early and late leaves with mostly light occurrences to interior pages; old color Christmas card laid-in between pages 104-105; several 19th century newspaper clippings and the like laid-in at other leaves. A good antiquarian copy. Unpaged b/w frontispiece portrait of Alexander Pope with tissue guard followed by engraved vignette-illustrated title page; page i is text title page with Crissy & Markley imprint at bottom but without date. Aforementioned Wallace inscription should be approximate publishing date. Book was acquired from a Lafayette County, Mississippi estate with another book offering Wallace family and Como, Panola County, Mississippi linkages; this book's Wallace might very well be Col. J.M. Wallace (1818-1900) who is buried at Como's Friendship Cemetery in an extended family plot which includes one Caroline A. Wallace (1834-1925). "Colonel" was often a southern honorific bestowed upon wealthy citizens whether they achieved that rank in military service or not. Cursory research locates a Captain Wallace leading Company A of the 9th Mississippi Infantry mustered from DeSoto County during the Civil War. Pages iii-xlii feature Samuel Johnson's THE LIFE OF ALEXANDER POPE, ESQ. Pages 43-208 are a collection of Pope's POETICAL WORKS including Pastorals, An Essay on Criticism, The Rape of the Lock, The Temple of Fame, Thebais of Statius, Essay on Man, Moral Essays, Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot, The Satires of Dr. John Donne, Epilogue to the Satires, The Dunciad, etc. Pages 209-363 are THE ILIAD OF HOMER translated by Alexander Pope. Pages 365-479 are THE ODYSSEY OF HOMER with Pope's Postscript. Pages 480-484 is THE BATTLE OF FROGS AND MICE by Archdeacon Parnell corrected by Mr. Pope.
