En 1986 y por primera vez desde que Eisenhower fue presidente, el King Features Syndicate necesit� de un dibujante para la tira diaria de Popeye. Fue toda una sorpresa dentro del mundo del c�mic que uno de los sindicatos m�s venerables y respetados confiara a uno de sus personajes m�s amados y m�s ic�nicos a un dibujante cuyo personaje mejor conocido era un mis�ntropo depravado y de mal car�cter llamado Dirty Duck y en cuyo curr�culum figurase la revista Playboy y el National Lampoon (revista sat�rica que London contribuy� a fundar) adem�s de haber sido uno de los Air Pirates (un grupo de dibujantes underground famoso por publicar una parodia no autorizada para adultos protagonizada por Mickey Mouse, que acab� en un juicio con la Disney que dur� una d�cada.) Aunque pareciera una decisi�n poco acertada no se puede negar el talento de London ni su amor y conocimientos de las tiras c�micas cl�sicas. Para todos aquellos que conoc�an la trayectoria de Popeye, la elecci�n de London como su nuevo dibujante resultaba la m�s obvia. Ten�an a un dibujante que sab�a capturar el esp�ritu libre, ca�tico e impredecible del Teatro Dedal cl�sico.
