Item description from seller

BRAND NEW Copy. Off-print of Univ of Kansas, Museum of Natural History, Vol 8, No. 6 of April 2, 1956. The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) is singularly the most important species of mammals from sheer abundance in the Kansas grasslands and neighboring states. The feeding, trampling, and burrowing habits of this vole exert enormous influence on the quantity, composition of vegetation and terrain, and sustains many other mammals, reptiles, and birds (very important food item for the long-eared owl) in the food chain. This mongraph considers the actual population of this small creature through study of various habitats in changing seasons and live-trapping, tracing individual histories without eliminating the animals. A study withe considerable contributions to public health concerns with vectors of disease, forestry, orchards, nurseries, and environmental concerns with natural food chains. Fine copy.
