About this Item

Description:

[Florence]: self-published, 1989. Quarto (30 × 21 cm). Seven leaves of xerox copies with altogether 16 experimental typographic designs. Stapled to upper left corner. Title page with Grossi's signature and handwritten note: "computer music da programmi di Pietro Grossi '76 - '89" (computer music from programs by Pietro Grossi '76 - '89"). Very good. One of the pioneers of electronic and stochastic music, Grossi began his graphic work in the second half of the 1980s. His graphic works are entitled "Home Art". Grossi experimented with mainframe computers early on and used a personal computer for his graphic experiments. He used the same techniques to create images that he had used for many years on mainframe computers for his sound compositions. As early as 1962, he visited an Olivetti mainframe computer in a bank and was so impressed by its sounds that he continued to explore the possibilities of the new technology. He translated works by Bach, Scarlatti, Paganini, Brahms, Chopin, Stravinsky and Debussy into codes with which it was possible to reproduce the sound sequences. In terms of sound, the results were a far cry from instrumental recordings, but Rossi was initially interested in using the computer as a separate instrument. He soon used random principles to give the computer interpretative possibilities. A further step was to use the computer as a tool for composition. Between 1970 and 1985, he created numerous compositions that made use of the computing power of large computers to translate geometric images and mathematical curves into sound sequences, for example. The graphic sequences of "Home Art" were a continuation of this work. (Cf.
