Prva knjiga govori o gradu Dubrovniku od njegovog osnutka do 1526. godine Druga knjiga obuhvaca razdoblje od 1526. do 1808. godine. Grad Dubrovnik osnovan je na pomorskoj trgovini i i trgovini sa okolnim zemljama Balkana (Bosnom, Srbijom, Dalmacijom) tokom ranog srednjeg vijeka i dosta vremena bio je jedini protivnik Mletacke republike Venecije na istocnom dijelu Jadranu. Zbog bogatstva i vjestih diplomatskih odnosa, grad Dubrovnik se znatno razvio posebno u XV. i XVI vijeku.
