FIRST EDITION 1868, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE TITLE PAGE. 8vo, approximately 185 x 125 mm, 7¼ x 4¾ inches, pages: viii, 106, bound in original publisher's brown cloth, gilt ruled border, small gilt vignette and gilt lettering to upper cover, spine gilt lettered with 2 gilt rules, dark green endpapers. Very slight rubbing to head of spine, tail of spine and corners very slightly worn, small bump to upper corners, gilt bright, cloth slightly bubbled in 2 tiny places, small grazed area to front pastedown due to bookplate removal, binder's tiny label on rear pastedown (Burns & Co), front inner paper hinge cracked, binding tight and firm, occasional small fox spot, otherwise contents clean. A very good copy. At the top of the title page Beckwith has written: "Geo. Barnes Esq with the author's comp(limen)ts". Chapters on champagne, French Wines, a few pages each on the wines of Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Spain and Portugal, the Paris Exhibition of 1867 with notes on the displays from round the world, a few lines on each, trade-marks and protection, wine merchants and the wine trade, why we drink wine. Beckwith was a wine merchant and juror at the Paris Exhibition and this work is a reprint of his Report on Wines for the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867 with additions and corrections, noted on title page.
