Ex-library copy. 96 pages plus three b/w plates (Plate 1 as frontispiece; Plates 2 and 3 at rear with latter being a foldout). H 21.5cm x L 13.75cm. Contemporary flexible brown cloth covers; top half of spine cloth perished with surviving lower half peeled and torn with fragments of old library shelf sticker which has some overlaps to covers; rear cover along with rfep and foldout plate are only tenuously attached by a single thread with front board comparatively firm (remains text block is firm too). Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the covers and modestly enhances the book's shelf presence. Personal bookplate "Private Library | of | C.H. White, U.S. Navy." on front cover verso. Sandwich, New Hampshire Library "Regulations" bookplate on ffep; four-line ink inscription "C.H. White | USS. Lackawanna | Lima - Peru - | Nov. 1880" at top right of frontispiece's blank recto (USS Lackawanna was a U.S. Navy screw-propelled sloop-of-war in service during the Civil War from 1863-1865 and two other service commissions from 1866-1871 and 1872-1885). Slight foxing and minor soiling to interior leaves. Interesting US Navy association which places the book aboard the ship which hosted the five day Lackawanna Conference aka the Arica conference during October 1880 where delegates from Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and the U.S. Chilean diplomatic legation unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate a peace settlement for the War of the Pacific involving the three South American countries. There were London editions of Joseph Jopling's book in 1827 and 1839 and a "New edition, improved" issued in 1842; this edition is undated but, per the binding style and inscription, is probably circa 1870-1880.
