This is not abstract. It appears in psychopathy checklists under “grandiose sense of self-worth.” It appears in the literature on threatened egotism, where fragile high self-esteem predicts aggression precisely when that self-view is challenged. It appears in the daily experience of adoptive parents whose child rejects every offer of care with superior disdain.
