Third printing (as stated upon copyright page; first published June 1903). viii, 207 pages. Hardcover: H 19.75cm x L 13.25cm. No dust jacket. Dark green cloth; some mottling to boards; small cloth loss at frayed spine ends; spine's white stamping flaked but legible; front board's white lettering still fairly bright. Edges toned; deckle fore-edge and bottom edge. Toning/foxing to endpapers; some scattered soiling and toning to interior leaves along with occasional pencil underlining and margin marks. Binding still remains firm. A good+ copy. Biblical scholar Ernest DeWitt Burton joined the University of Chicago in 1892 as chair of the Department of New Testament Literature and served as the institution's third president from 1923 until his death in 1925. A liberal Christian theologian involved with the Social Gospel movement and a co-founder of the Northern Baptist Convention, Shailer Mathews served as dean of the University of Chicago Divinity School from 1908-1933 and an endowed chair is named in his honor. {Rel_Shelf#2}.…
