You are standing at the bedside. Your patient cannot breathe on their own. The ventilator is on. And the question is simple:
Are you sure about your settings? Most clinicians are not.
Not because they are bad at their job. But because mechanical ventilation is hard. The textbooks are old. The guidelines keep changing. And the patient in front of you cannot wait.
That is exactly why this book exists.
Principles and Practice of Mechanical Ventilation gives you the full picture — in plain language you can use today.
It covers how the lungs work under pressure. It covers every ventilator mode, from basic assist-control to NAVA and PAV+. It covers ARDS, COPD, asthma, trauma, and newborn patients. It covers how to read waveforms. How to spot dyssynchrony. How to protect the lungs and not hurt them.
And when the time comes to take your patient off the ventilator — it tells you how to do that too.
Here is what is inside:
9 complete sections. 36 chapters. Evidence from over 50 landmark clinical trials — including ARDSNet, PROSEVA, EOLIA, and the ABC trial.
You get step-by-step protocols you can use right now. You get ARDSNet tables. You get PBW reference charts. You get the real numbers behind weaning decisions.
This is not a review book. This is not a quick guide. This is the complete clinical reference — built for respiratory therapists, ICU nurses, and critical care physicians who want real answers, not summaries.
This book is for you if:
You work in an ICU and you want to understand what the ventilator is doing and why.
You are an RT preparing for the NBRC exam or your next shift in the unit.
You are a nurse who wants to know when to call the doctor and when you already have the answer.
You are a physician in training and you want a real reference — not another pocket card.
Open any chapter. Use it at the bedside. Put it down. Pick it up again tomorrow.
When your patient cannot breathe, you deserve a book that can.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
