Shelved in Room A Octavo Overflow. Dr. Francis Henry Ramsbotham's The Principles and Practice of Obstetric Medicine & Surgery was a landmark work that revolutionized midwife and physician training in childbirth (parturition) across the English-speaking world. Before this work, medical manuals relied mostly on dense prose or small diagrams. Ramsbotham's book was famous for its exceptionally detailed full-page steel and wood engravings, showing exact fetal positions, anatomical views of the female pelvis, difficult labor presentations, and surgical techniques (like the use of obstetric forceps). Reprinted across several decades in the mid-19th century, the book was sometimes gifted to medical students to start their reference libraries. This is one such copy, featuring the institution's emblem, custom gilding, and prize bookplate gifted to a student who won first prize in "minute anatomy" for his class year. 1415265.
