Item description from seller

Fifth Edition, printed just two years after the first edition of 1880. The publishers state, 'The success which this remarkable book has so soon achieved has induced us to issue a popular edition at a price that will bring it within the reach of all classes' (namely, $1.00 for the present cloth edition). This publisher's announcement in the front matter contains 4 pages of laudatory 'opnions of the press.' vii, [3], 4-512, [8] pp. 12mo, burgundy cloth, gilt stamped spine lettering, floral endpapers. Dampstain to tail edge, edges worn with some fraying to the cloth, spine ends abraded, RFEP torn out, interior text sound and unmarked with tight, square binding. Bookplate of H. G. While there he implemented numerous reforms, including overseeing the establishment of 'Prison Mirror', which continues to be published today as the oldest and longest running prison newspaper in the US. Additionally, his obituary notes, 'he memorable winter of 1879, December 13 he left Manston station at 8 o?clock p.m. for his home, about a half distant, but the storm bewildered him and thirty-eight hours later he was found about ten miles from home, badly frozen. His physical disabilities now seemed to stimulate and sharpen the grand mental faculties and wonderful energy with which he was endowed.'.…
