Professor Chen and Professor Leat have devoted their careers to the field of paediatric vision for many years and are well published in this area. Both have been inspiring figures in the Optometry profession in their respective countries. Their collaboration with world experts (in the field of low vision, colour vision, dispensing, ocular diseases, etc.) has resulted in this long awaited paediatric vision care book, which is an important milestone and will be a valuable resource for education in clinical eye care. This book gathers wisdom and knowledge from among Western and Eastern academics. The contributing authors have written from their passion and enthusiasm to develop and shape paediatric vision care within the eye care profession. The book incorporates comprehensive information on current practice, based on the evidence-base in the literature, and discusses future challenges in paediatric vision care.
Paediatric Vision Care provides a guide for the paediatric eye care professional and covers all aspects of the management of eye care for infants and children up to and including the early teenage years. The first and main section covers vision development and the scope of paediatric vision care in terms of assessment and management. The second section shares two current challenges and controversies in paediatric eye care practice, namely orthokeratology and yoked prisms. There are numerous photographs of cases, scans and graphs provided in full colour, throughout the text.
Dr Ai-Hong Chen Ai-Hong Chen is a Professor of Optometry at the Universiti Teknologi MARA. She currently holds positions as the Head for the Center of Excellence for Research in Optometry & Vision Sciences (iROViS) and the Director for the Communities of Research in UiTM. Since 2002, she has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a Fellow of the College of Vision Development since 2003. She has been instrumental in establishing the paediatric optometry practice in Malaysia since 1998 and is very involved in the development of the optometry program, having played many different roles in the eye care community in Malaysia through former positions as Chairman for the Head of Optometry Programs Council, council member for the Malaysian Optical Council, committee member for the Joint Technical Committee, the expert panel for program accreditation under the Malaysian Qualification Agency, Chairman for the National Contact Lens Exam Questions Formulate Committee, Chairman for the National Contact Lens Practical Exam Committee, as well as Deputy Chairman for the Optometry Wayforward Committee under the Ministry Of Higher Education. She lectures and runs the Paediatric Optometry Clinic. Her research interest emphasizes vision development and enhancement, visual ergonomic on near-task related visual adaptation, learning related vision problems, vision screening, and visual rehabilitation in special needs children. Her contribution to the paediatric research was recognized through the Young Investigator Award (Singapore Ophthalmology Society), the Seri-Santen Travel Fellowship, and the Essilor Travel Fellowship (Asia Pacific Optometry Council).
Dr Susan J Leat Susan Leat is a Professor at the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry and Vision Science. She graduated with First Class Honours in Optometry from the University of Manchester (formerly UMIST), England. She obtained her PhD and undertook post-doctoral studies at Cardiff University (formerly UWCC), Great Britain. She was founder and director of the Cardiff University Low Vision Clinic, the first university-based low vision clinic of its kind in Britain, and was instrumental in establishing the Special Assessment Clinic in Cardiff. She moved to Canada in 1991 to take up a Faculty position in the University of Waterloo where she is currently a Professor. She is past Head of the Paediatric and Special Needs Clinic, Primary Care Externship Programme Officer and Senior Admissions Officer for Optometry. She is a clinician in the Low Vision Clinic and the Paediatric and Special Needs Clinic and is currently the Head of Residencies. She teaches and conducts research in the areas of psychophysics, low vision and paediatrics.
