The Pain Cave: Start With Where, Not Why

In a culture that tells us to define our purpose before we begin, ultramarathoner and entrepreneur Rafael Hidalgo offers a different perspective: that the most meaningful pursuits often begin before we can explain them. They begin with a pull, a direction we feel before we understand it.

In The Pain Cave: Start With Where, Not Why, Hidalgo chronicles his 45-hour journey around Mont Blanc during the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), one of the world’s most grueling endurance races. But this is not a story about finishing times or athletic achievement.

It is about what emerges when the body breaks down and the mind reaches its limit. It challenges the belief that mindset alone can carry us through our hardest moments. In the depths of the pain cave, Hidalgo discovers that something deeper than body and mind is needed to avoid giving up and reveal a strength within us we did not know existed.

Blending endurance, philosophy, mythology, spirituality, and personal transformation, The Pain Cave explores meaning, sacrifice, discomfort, and the difficult path toward the dreams that truly resonate with us.
